Posted by Glark on May 23, 2006 in 2006 Book Drive | 524 commentsDid you donate something to the Harrison County Library System? Please let us know what you sent and why.

You’re a superhero for helping out a library in need, so make sure you get your much-earned props. Feel free to link to your own website, sites you’re involved with, or a charity close to your heart. (And if you prefer to remain anonymous, please still let us know what you sent, but you can keep your identity to yourself (See? Like a superhero!)
When you donate and add your donation story to the comments you’ll be eligible to win one of 10 3-shirt prizes from Glarkware. We will announce the winners after the drive ends!
If you bought something off a wish list please copy and paste the URL into your post — it will turn into a link automagically! Note that your post will appear after we’ve had a change to read it over and add info to our book drive tally (if applicable).

I noticed it has been awhile since Margaret Sherry received any books, so I decided to help them out by donating:
Biscuit Visits the Big City (My First I Can Read) by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
Walter Was Worried by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
Rough Weather Ahead for Walter the Farting Dog by William Kotzwinkle
Ark Angel: An Alex Rider Adventure by Anthony Horowitz
Finally, I also donated the following two to West Biloxi since the first seemed an appropriate one to include in my final round of donations:
Lola at the Library by Anna Mcquinn
Madeline’s Rescue by Ludwig Bemelmans
Thanks for organizing such a wonderful book drive. Living in Germany, I first stumbled across Pamie’s recaps when Gilmore girls started airing two years ago. I can’t imagine not having books to read (I seem to have spent most of my childhood reading), so I thought I’d donate 2 children’s books to Biloxi Library:
Duck and Goose – by Tad Hills
High Rhulain (Redwall) – by Brian Jacques
-Kate
[Thanks, Kate! -- pamie]
I sent a copy of “Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills” to the Biloxi Library. Just because I could. Thanks to Pamie for doing this again this year.
Hi, I donated to the Orange Grove Library the following books:
“Molly Moon’s Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure (Molly Moon)” Georgia Byng;
“The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo (Yearling Book)” Judy Blume
“How Do I Feel?/Como me siento? (Good Beginnings)”
Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries
“Better Spelling in 5 Minutes a Day: Fun Spelling Activities for Kids and Parents on the Go Intermediate Grades (5 Minutes a Day)” Mark Pennington
Thanks for organizing this!
I couldn’t resist since it’s the last day. I donated two more items to the Pass Christian Library off their wishlist: Baby Proof by Emily Giffin and The Rock (DVD).
I decided to send Gulfport Library one of P.G. Wodehouse’s books (Joy in the Morning) and also a DVD copy of The Shining. I found your book drive through TWoP. I am a graduate student in Library Sciences and I am always in favor of raising the profile of libraries and archives, since I know first hand how cash-poor and forgotten they can be! I really, really appreciate what you all are doing, as a user and supporer of all things library-related. Thanks.
I got paid today, so I had to donate a few more books to the Saucier Library. I sent them these, from their wishlist:
Prime Time Pitcher by Matt Christopher
The Kid Who Only Hit Homers by Matt Christopher
Heartbeat by Sharon Creech
The freelance work is coming in fast and furious, so I thought I would stop by for one last donation before the drive closes. I sent the Gulfport Library the following:
- Ring for Jeeves (Because everyone needs lots of Jeeves and Wooster)
- Charada (one of my all-time favorite movies)
- Icebergs (a great new novel by a friend)
- Moonspinners (to remind me of my middle-school gothic-novel-reading phase and one of my childhood idols, Hayley Mills).
I have to say that this is some of the most fun I’ve had for a charity!
I wanted to donate earlier, but this was the first chance I got and had money to do so. I work in children’s publishing, so this is such a great thing to take part in. I sent Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco and Stock Cars by Lisa Bullard because anything that gets young boys to read is good.
Hello! I wrote into Pamie this week as well to let her know that my office will be donating en masse. We have a monthly program for “casual Friday” where we can dress in jeans and tees on Fridays for a minimum donation of $10 to the monthly charity. We began this last year with The Red Cross efforts after Hurricane Katrina and have continued it ever since. It has been a wonderful way to talk our boss into a casual Friday as well as encourage philanthropy in our little office. I know the book drive ends today but I will be sending in all our checks on Monday. Great cause and I’m happy I was able to convince my co-workers to make it this month’s charity.
[don't worry, lisapete. we'll keep the door open for your donation. we're stoked your office chose to help us out. -- pamie]
$245 in office donations collected and on it’s way today…
Thank you for this beautiful site! As a visitor from Finland, when I found about this site from a local magazine, this was something I had to do. About 3 years ago I visited the coastal region of Mississippi and Louisiana with my husband and friend from Alabama. I never forget it.
I purchased the following books for Margaret Sherry Memorial Library:
1 of: The Berenstain Bears and the Baby Chipmunk (I Can Read Book 1)
1 of: Sushi: Taste and Techniques
Sushi because I’m fan of Japanese culture, and Bears because it’s very important to encourage children to read – and use libraries. This is a good cause, please do not stop the site running.
I donated to the Saucier Library because kids need books:
In honor of my husband, who loves China after working there, China: http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....38?ie=UTF8
In honor of my parents, who are Hoosier horse owners, Cherry Hill’s Horse Care for Kids: http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....38?ie=UTF8
Because we’re all big Colts’ fans, Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts Star Quarterback: http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....38?ie=UTF8
I’ve missed the deadline but I’m hoping the Gulfport Library can still use
Life at Blandings (Omnibus) by P.G. Wodehouse
Life with Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
The Complete Stories by Flannery O’Connor
Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart
Carry On, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
Thank You, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
Much Obliged, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
Gilmore Girls, 2nd season (DVD)
Buffalo Bill, 1st & 2nd season (DVD)
Arrested Development, 2nd season (DVD)
All of these donations are inspired by my mother, Mary Ann, a librarian in California.
A copy of a book called Stockcars is on it’s way to Saucier Library, in honor of my boyfriend’s nephew who loves cars and starts preschool this week.
My local library was closed do to flooding last week in northeastern Ohio. The damage to the collection was minimal, but it sort of gripped my heart when I saw it was closed for three days. That feeling was what fueled my purchase today…the library is like a warm blanket in the wintertime, something you don’t appreciate until you don’t have it anymore. Today’s purchase is going to be someone else’s warm blanket.
I sent Meg Cabot’s “How to Be Popular” to the Biloxi library.
Always happy to spread girly book joy! :)
The staff of Marquette University Raynor Memorial Library raised $260 for the Gulfport Public Library. We selected some dvds and books from your Amazon Wishlist.
Best wishes from your friends in Milwaukee.
My family and I sent the following books to the Biloxi Library in memory of Lorraine Katz:
George and Martha One Fine Day – James Marshall
George and Martha Round and Round – James Marshall
Puss in Boots – Charles Perrault
All-of-a-Kind Family – Sydney Taylor
A Wrinkle in Time – Madeleine L’Engle
Jack and the Beanstalk – Steven Kellogg
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler – E.L. Konigsburg
Library Lion – Michelle Knudsen
Fox on Stage – James Marshall
Fox at School – Edward Marshall
Most are from the wish list, but I added a couple of classics about New York (where Lorraine lived and was a librarian), and one about a very smart girl. I figured there can never be too many copies of A Wrinkle in Time!
I sent the Pass Christian library two books in honor of my soon-to-be mother-in-law who spent many summers in Pass Christian and is deaf:
American Sign Language The Easy Way (Barron’s Easy Way Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....PV4HRRZ21H
Random House Webster’s American Sign Language Dictionary
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....PV4HRRZ21H
I’m sending the Samantha Story Collection (from the American Girls books) to the Biloxi Library. I always loved the American Girls stories when I was little, and Samantha was my favorite, so I’m happy to have a chance to share them.
Here’s the list donated to the Pass Christian Library from their wish list:
1 The Road (rough cut)
1 The World Is Flat [Updated…
1 Special Topics in Calamity…
1 Lisey’s Story
1 The Guy Not Taken: Stories
1 The Greatest Story Ever So…
I had hoped to donate books that my bookclub had read already but instead went with some books that could end up on our future read lists. Enjoy!
Since our parents, Don and Maureen, do not want us to buy them Christmas gifts, we decided to donate books in their name to the Biloxi Library. They actually lived the first years of their married life in Biloxi while our father was in the service, so the city will always have a special place in their hearts. Moreover, no one taught us to appreciate the love of reading and libraries more than the two of them.
We have donated the following in their names:
Kirsten’s Story Collection: for Mom, especially, because she always drove us to the bookstore to get the newest release in whatever series we were reading at the time
Blandings Castle: for Dad, especially, because no one loves Jeeves and Wooster more
Games, How to Play, and How to Win: for both of them, because of the countless hours they spent playing cards, Memory, Yahtzee, Racko, Sorry, Scrabble, (and every other game in the basement) with us over the years
Because it’s Christmas and my dad’s family is WAY into it and I hate wrapping and paying shipping and I hate the post office and half of my family seems to be moving in the next month anyway so I’ve gotten all these emails saying “WE DON’T NEED ANYTHING BULKY!!!!!”, I decided this year it would have to be a theme that would fit all of them. But what? By nature, whatever one family member likes, another hates so what will fit them all? Crazily, the answer came this very morning, a very late (or is it just seasonal?) December 18th with the book drive. I tried to get books that reflected the family member whose name I was giving it in, but in the cases where that didn’t work, I will write a letter saying something along the lines of “HEY. It’s for charity!” But seriously, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing you guys are doing. So I got the following:
Biloxi Public Library
Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life Lessons at the World’s Premier School for Exotic Animal Trainers (okay, that one’s from me. I totally want to read it.)
Pyramids (DK Eyewitness Books)
Photography (DK Eyewitness Books)
Blues Masters: The Very Best of T-Bone Walker (CD)
A Bear Called Paddington
Jackson, MS (Images of America)
Pass Christian Library
The Year of Magical Thinking
Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (for my step-grandfather, the ex-HR man)
Gulfport Library
Three Coins in a Fountain (DVD – for my mom)
Going My Way/Holiday Inn (DVD set – for my grandmother)
D’Iberville Library
Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disaster and Survival
Margaret Sherry Memorial Library
Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse
Orange Grove Library
Rough Weather Ahead for Walter the Farting Dog
I purchased from Amazon.
