I sent three books via amazon.com to the Margaret Sherry Memorial Library and forgot to post about it here ’til just now. I sent “If You Give a Pig a Party” (’cause I love that series), “Fishing (For Fun!)” (’cause my best friend’s dad used to take us fishing only he wouldn’t get permits for us and he’d wade out into the river and we’d just have to watch from the bank and, really, it wasn’t all that fun…but maybe the author of this book knows something), and “The Joy Luck Club” (’cause it was on the list and I liked it when I read it ages ago).

I sent two things to the West Biloxi Public Library: Tess of the D’Urbervilles, by Thomas Hardy, because I borrowed it from my local library at age 13, and it became the first hefty classic novel I read. Also, the DVD of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, because no town on the planet should be deprived of the greatness of Newman and Redford!

  3. Anonymous

“The Purpose-Driven Life,” “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” and some Updike all en route to the d’Iberville library.

  4. I headed towards the end of the list of libraries, guessing that the ones at the top might be getting a larger share of donations, and sent the following to the Pass Christian Library in Gulfport:

The Long Tail by Chris Anderson (which also has an excellent blog at http://longtail.typepad.com) – a book I’d recommend to anyone and everyone

Espresso Tales by Alexander McCall Smith (I haven’t read it, but I remember Pamie’s encounter with him at a signing, and I have many friends who says his books are great escape material)

  5. Hi! I’m gary from Staten Island. My wife and I were married in Algiers, New Orleans. Last year we were heartsick. We donated:
    Olivia and the Missing Toy
    David Copperfield
    The Sixties :1960-1969
American Cinema in the Shadow Of Watergate

Bless everyone who makes a donation to keep reading in the Gulf Coast alive!

  6. I’m fortunate enough to have a job where I get to teach kids to read everyday. It’s so fulfilling to see my kids enjoy reading when just weeks before they couldn’t recognize the letters of the alphabet. I’m hoping the kids of the Margaret Sherry Library will get the same enjoyment out of these two books:

    “The Stolen Child”
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155

“Mabel O’Leary Put Peas in Her Ear-y”
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155

  7. The staff from the website Wordcandy.net made a group donation of kids’ and YA books to the Biloxi library. Our choices were:

‘The Big Orange Splot’ and ‘The Hoboken Chicken Emergency’, both by Daniel Pinkwater

‘The Phantom Tollbooth’, by Norton Juster

‘Alice, I think’, by Susan Juby

‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day’, by Judith Viorst

    ‘Flipped’, by Wendelin Van Draanen

‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’, by Judi Barret

‘Gregor the Overlander’, by Suzanne Collins

‘The Tiny Seed’, by Eric Carle

    ‘Goodnight, Gorilla’ by Peggy Rathmann

‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, by Roald Dahl

‘Harriet the Spy’, by Louise Fitzhugh

‘A Wrinkle in Time’, by Madeleine L’Engle

‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, by Diana Wynne Jones

‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’, by Crockett Johnson

We hope the readers enjoy them–they’re all books we’ve read and loved.

[That's so fantastic! Thank you so much! -- pamie]

  8. I donated The Phantom Tollbooth and the DK book Cars to the Biloxi Library. Thanks for providing the avenue to do this!

  9. Pat Nametz

I sent Eyewitness: A Horse http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155 to the Saucier Library. I hope some young person will enjoy it.

  10. I sent the Biloxi Library Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook. To me, Martha embodies some wonderful qualities — having a dream, she’s dedicated to working hard to reaching her goals, and she has made a wonderful comeback in the last year, showing grace under a great deal of scrutiny. Love her or no, I find her to be inspiring. Baking is where she started, and I find baking to be an enjoyable and even peaceful past-time. My hope is that this book perhaps inspires, and brings joy to people.

I went with the Pass Christian Library. Ordered http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155 because it was a book I recognized. I would have ordered more and for more libraries, but funds are way too tight.

  12. Grabbed Schindler’s List and The Sting for Gulfport Library because the thought of people lacking access to the Redford-Newman team-up chills me to my bones.

  13. My boyfriend is currently working in the Gulfport/Biloxi area, cleaning up from the hurricanes. I recently went down to visit him, and seeing as how I’m a poor workin’ girl, I donated my time instead of books or money. I was able to work in the (unfortunatly destroyed) downtown Biloxi library, helping to re-check in boxes upon boxes of books that were sent away to be restored. I was also able to meet and work w/ two of the many wonderful Harrison County librarians, Carrie Bellais and Lucienne Gautier. They were awesome, and acted as my un-offical tour guides for the downtown area. I was also able to meet Sharon Davis, who is the sweetest person ever. I have to give her enormous props for the work she does over seeing the putting of the libraries back together. I had a blast helping out, and plan to do so now each time I go down. All thanks to Dewey Donation!

P.s. I have pictures of the downtown Biloxi library and some of the work I did, if anyone is interested in seeing them.

[Sarah, we'd love to see the pictures, and hear more about the work you did. Just email one of us or post a link (if you've got a site where you've written about it). -- pamie]

Paying some good things in my life forward to Pass Christian. No particular reason, just picked off their list:

Lethal Weapon 2 (Director’s Cut) – Richard Donner
One Last Breath – Stephen Booth
    Deal Breaker – Harlan Coben
Anonymous Lawyer: A Novel – Jeremy Blachman
Bones of the Barbary Coast – Daniel Hecht
Vanishing Point – Richard C. Sarafian
    Coronado: Stories – Dennis Lehane

  15. Michael

AB Chao’s interview with Greg Berlanti on TWoP today inspired me to send the “Everwood – The Complete First Season” DVD to Gulfport, even though it was not on their wishlist. I also included the “Veronica Mars – The Complete Second Season” DVD from their wishlist to get the free shipping.

I then noticed Orange Grove had a special request for “Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson” by Louise Rennison so I sent it to them along with with “Away Laughing on a Fast Camel: Even More Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson)” by the same author and “The Office – Season One (US/NBC Version)” DVD.

  16. Mary Beth & Chris

We sent a copy of Taxi Driver http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....#038;n=130 to the Gulfport library.

Chris decided that Taxi Driver had the most entertainment value (out of the small list I proposed). Gulfport is close to our hearts since Chris used to have the Gulfport County Clerk’s office as one of his clients.

  17. As a child I loved going to the library and spending hours reading the books and reviewing the titles. And after looking at the Biloxi Library’s pictures my heart ached. So of course I have to send something for the little lambies to read. I picked three titles from the Biloxi Library’s wish list:
Guess How Much I Love You: Vietnamese and English
Minnie and Moo: The Case of the Missing Jelly Donut (I Can Read Book 3)
    Wemberly Worried

  18. StaceyBr

What a great idea. I spent many happy hours with books from my neighborhood libary. I loved the library so much so I worked there part-time during high school :-) I wouldn’t want people to be without the opportunity to read (or watch movies).

    I donated to three libaries:

    Pass Christian Library
“Dark Side of the Moon (A Dark-Hunter Novel)”
    Sherrilyn Kenyon; Audio CD; $12.97

  22. From my friend Ali:

    Hi Pam!

I hadn’t been to your site lately, and today I was instantly guilted
    into donating books via Dewey.

I bought C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, and Norman Maclean’s audio CD of A River Runs Through It.

I chose the Pass Christian library, because I used to get telephone orders from that town when I worked at the JCPenney catalog center in the 1990s, where I first met Catherine Zarate’s husband, who also worked there, who also happened to know you, and then I met you at IBM… and so it’s that whole Kevin Bacon loop. Not only that, but Chuy rhymes with Dewey.

  23. To the Saucier Library (from their wishlist):

    Tar Beach by Faith Ringold
There Are Monsters Everywhere by Mercer Mayer

I loved the idea of a children’s library; they definitely deserve (and need) it.

  24. I sent the following to the Biloxi library:

    - Private Eye-Lashes: Radio’s Lady Detectives
    - The Great Voyages of Zheng He: English/Vietnamese

I selected the English/Vietnamese book because I know there’s a large Vietnamese community in the heavily affected areas of Biloxi.

I selected the other because it sounded like an interesteding read.

I’ve been to this area and have an idea of what they’re dealing with down there. Thanks for putting this drive together, Glark!

  25. Sharon

I sent two items to Pass Christian Library:

Danse Macabre, by Laurell K. Hamilton, because I’ve been reading this series from my local library (http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155)

and Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Betrayal, because my six-year-old would want them to have anything Star Wars (http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....8;n=283155).

  26. Deirdre

This year’s book drive donation went to the Biloxi Library:

    Cheaper by the Dozen
Boom and Bust: American Cinema in the 1940s
    Blanche on the Lam
Spy Goddess, Book One: Live and Let Shop
Atomic Renaissance: Woman Mystery Writers of the 1940s and 1950s

  27. Kate Bertram

I was placing an Amazon order anyway, so I figured I might as well add a few more donations to the cart. The West Biloxi Library will soon be receiving:

March of the Penguins (DVD) because it’s 115 degrees in DC today, and it would be downright refreshing

Marley and Me because my beloved aunt loves it.

    Thanks, Pamie and everyone.

  28. Roger Bixby

I just sent the Biloxi library two books by Elenor Estes, Rufus M., and The Middle Mofat.

  29. Betsy K

I bought these three books for the Orange Grove Library:

“It’s Raining Pigs & Noodles” by Jack Prelutsky

“A Pizza the Size of the Sun” by Jack Prelutsky

“The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 13)” by Lemony Snicket

The only thing I am worried about is, the Lemony Snicket book isn’t released until October 18th, and according to my order form because I selected the Free Shipping nothing will ship until October 18th (it will all be combined in one package). I guess I will try customer service to see if anyone over there can help get the other two books there sooner!

  30. I’m a library school student in Edmonton, Canada, so the devestation suffered by libraries from natural disasters hits really close to home. Thanks for giving me a chance to do something.

I donated to the Pass Christian library:
The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (I know, I’m a big nerd, but librarians love properly formatted citations!)
and Cross Country: Fifteen Years and 90,000 Miles on the Roads and Interstates of America with Lewis and Clark, a lot of bad motels, a moving van, Emily Post, … kids, and enough coffee to kill an elephant, Just because it had a cool looking cover.

  35. Just sent off a donation of “The Magic Brocade: A Tale of China” and “Down the Rabbit Hole”

  36. Eleanor

I sent two books to the Pass Christian Library and three to the Biloxi Library. It really feels good. I think I am going to make a habit of donating a book every time I buy one for myself!

  37. Oh man, it feels so good. I need to do this more often.
Maybe someday I’ll go to Biloxi and stop at the library to read the book about Buffalo Bill and the Wild West Show I donated.
Then I would brag about it to all my friends (hopefully guilting them into philanthropy in the process).

  38. Sarah Day

I ordered This is the Teacher, Wolves, and What if You Met a Pirate? to the Biloxi Library.

All children should know what to do if they meet a pirate.

I hope the children of Gulfport enjoy their new books!

  47. Anonymous in LaLa Land

I made a deal with myself when I donated to the Dewey drive earlier this summer. If I got a job before the drive was over, I would give more. If I didn’t get a job, I would volunteer somehow to help out. Because no matter how depressing and ugly unemployment and job searches are, they are NOTHING compared to living through Katrina and its aftermath.

Last month I finally got a job – a great one — and I just received my first paycheck. So now I am giving back. West Biloxi Library is receiving two dvds:

    The Constant Gardner

    and

    Capote

If you can give, give more!

As always, the book drive rocks!

  48. I just sent Gulfport “Very Good, Jeeves!” by P.G. Wodehouse, as well as season one of Arrested Development, because laughter is always important.

  49. Whoops…no link.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/regis.....BX0RQNY3WU
