I’ll start this off with the money generated recently by Pwuellerstorfi’s Snark of Tubeys auctions from TWoP. There’s $875 + $100 dollars I added to keep her awesome “Tubey Dice” for myself and $25 for a nice round number. Since this money comes from Tubey’s Kids I think the best choice would be to earmark this for the Saucier Children’s Library.

I’m still figuring out what to do personally — cash or books so I’ll post again later for that!

Much love to all the kind souls who will post below me in advance!

I spent a number of years living in Mississippi, and during that time, my parents spent a number of hours in Gulfport, gambling on the riverboats. So this one’s for Dad.

I sent books to a place that took his cash, but I sent them my favorite books — ones that often end up on banned lists. So I’m even more impressed with Gulfport. They’re starting with some great titles.

This is why there are five copies of The Catcher in the Rye [School and Library Binding], five copies of Animal Farm [School and Library Binding], and two copies of Brave New World [Library Binding] on their way. Those books made me think differently about myself and my place in the world.

And, like Dave, I just want to thank everyone in advance for helping out again this year with another book drive. It’s been fun watching this thing grow. Have I mentioned before the good Karma? People get good luck from donating to the book drive. It’s true. I’ve heard stories of good dates, tests passed, promotions landed — all from sending a book to a library. It’s like a pricey wishing well. Toss in a book and see what happens!

For David T. Cole (and for, of course, his role in the decision to start recapping “Farscape), we donated Ernest Hemingway’s a Farewell to Arms (Bloom’s Notes) (Library Binding) and William Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses (School & Library Binding) from the Gulfport Library’s Wish List

We added an order from Biloxi Library’s Wish List in honor of Tara Ariano and Jacob Clifton, for being so generous in every way and such kick-ass writers, to boot.

In Tara and Jacob’s honor, Biloxi Libary will be receiving The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry (Hardcover) and, fittingly, Anatomy of Wonder : A Critical Guide to Science Fiction Fifth Edition (Hardcover)

TWoP's Scapers posted on June 10th, 2006 at 7:22 pm

I ordered copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Fahrenheit 451 and To Kill A Mockingbird for the Gulfport Library. Another Scaper contribution to a worthy cause.

I couldn’t resist the allure of giving books to those in need — not that I tried to.

I sent Story of a Storm: A Book about Hurricane Katrina (Hardcover) and Your Pregnancy & Newborn Journey: A Guide for Pregnant Teens (Teen Pregnancy and Parenting series) (Paperback) to Margaret Sherry Library.

DeAnn posted on June 10th, 2006 at 7:37 pm

We were beginning to wonder who the lucky library system would be this year. As always, you have chosen well.

We sent the Gulfport Library:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Widescreen Edition) (Harry Potter 3)
(because EVERYONE should be able to read Harry Potter — or see it)

Holy Blood, Holy Grail
Deception Point
Digital Fortress : A Thriller
(They asked for Dan Brown, so they got Dan Brown.)

Spider-Man 2 (Widescreen Special Edition)
(Because it RULED)

M. Giant, Trash, and M. Small posted on June 10th, 2006 at 8:46 pm

We just checked out the Biloxi wish list and saw that they lost all of the children’s section. So in honor of M. Small and his love of books, we also sent:

Elmer’s Weather (Vietnamese- English)
Brian Wildsmith’s Farm Animals (Vietnamese edition)
Brian Wildsmith’s Animals To Count (Vietnamese edition)
Animal Colors (Vietnamese Edition)

We can’t have kids with nothing to read. We simply can’t.

M. Giant, Trash, and M. Small posted on June 10th, 2006 at 9:16 pm

How can I pass up the opportunity to support such a good cause? And the new website is so pretty (like all of Glark’s designs), I’m sure I’ll be back. I ordered Brian Wildsmith’s Animals To Count (Vietnamese Edition), Brian Wildsmith’s Farm Animals (Vietnamese Edition) and The Best Americcan Short Stories 2005 for the Biloxi Public Library. Good luck, and thank you for organizing such a worthwhile campaign.

Outliving Heart Disease: The 10 New Rules for Prevention and Treatment
and
Habitat for Humanity: How to Build a House
for the West Biloxi Library. I decided to donate to one of the libraries that hadn’t been damaged too much by the hurricane but had low funds, because I thought most people would donate to the libraries that had been damaged.
Thanks to Pamie, TWoP, Glark, and everyone involved for helping out the library world!

I sent The New Harvard Guide to Women’s Health (because I think it’s important, and because I have relied on my library’s copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves for information and reassurance, so I know how great it is for a resource like that to be there when you need it), and, while I was on the West Biloxi Library’s wishlist, also bought them Girl Sleuth: nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her because it looked like a fun read.

I wish I could send more books! Thanks, M. Giant, for directing me here (via Velcrometer)!

Well drat. I didn’t cut-n-paste the books off the Biloxi Library’s wish list before I finished the transaction, and no they’re gone from the list. That’ll teach me to be efficient.

Anyway, one for the kids: The Seven Magic Brothers: and a couple to help with getting folks back into livable houses: Survival Spanish for Construction and Easy to Learn Construction Spanish. Last time I checked, most “learn Spanish quick” programs and books didn’t include words like “spackle,” “drywall,” “footing,” “tarpaper,” or “2-by-6.”

Incidentally, Glark and Pamie, and everyone else, Saucier and Pass Christian libraries have both had their wish lists completely cleared, as of 11:00 AM, June 11th. Here’s hoping that they add new items soon, so the generosity may continue unabated.

I’ll be sending the Dewey Donation page to a couple of mailing lists that I know are populated by readers.

In honor of my 2006 quest to read the classics that I somehow missed during my years as an English major, I purchased Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury (Vintage International) and Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea (Scribner Classics) for the Gulfport Library.

Then I threw in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition) for good measure, because everyone needs a little magic in their lives. :)

“Let’s Eat Out!: Your Passport to Living Gluten And Allergy Free ” by: Kim Koeller; and

“Celiac Disease : A Hidden Epidemic” by: Peter H.R. Green.

I just spent a week in Biloxi, MS, last month, with four friends–we volunteered with the hurricane recovery efforts being run out of Bethel Lutheran Church. Bethel Lutheran & the other Lutheran church in town running an incredible volunteer operation that is cleaning up & rebuilding houses, providing free medical care, and running a food distribution center, all while housing volunteers. It was an absolutely incredible experience & I hope to go back in the fall because they still need so much help.

So for that reason, three books related to building homes are headed to the Biloxi library: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1931131430/002-6649283-9856002?%5Fenc oding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1932553142/002-6649283-9856002?%5Fenc oding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155, and http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1580112730/002-6649283-9856002?%5Fenc oding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

So I’m sending Margaret Sherry three packages of their requested tape. And to make the order a little more fun, I threw in the “Schoolhouse Rock” DVD.

And THEN I realized I hadn’t sent an actual book anywhere! So from the Pass Christian wish list, I’m picking the very fun-sounding “The Penderwicks : A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy.”

I have tons of extended family in New Orleans and near the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and though thankfully none of them were physically harmed during the hurricanes, some of them did lose homes and businesses. I love Mississippi and Louisiana, spent many a summer there as a child, and I’m so glad Pamie and Glark set up this website to get the word out and give us a way to donate.

I donated these books to Saucier Library:

Gossamer by Lois Lowry
Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems (’cause the little ones need something to read, too)
Sand Dollar Summer by Kimberly K. Jones

I spent so much time at the Vernon Township Public Library during my childhood and adolescence, reading Lowry and others, and I think YA novels are crucial for bookish kids who need an outlet. Yay for donating!

I can never resist a good book drive! Mad props to you folks for setting up such a great cause.

I decided to get a few things from the Biloxi Wishlist:
-Crucible (Because the Salem witch trials this play pretends to be about were as fascinating as the ’50s red scare it’s really about. Either way, it’s a piece of history, and pretty damn amusing to boot. I hope some high school drama geek checks it out and falls in love with it.)
-More Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason (Because Nancy Pearl is kind of a local hero–she has an action figure!–and I kind of like the idea of donating a book written by a librarian, about books, to a library.)
-Lupus: Everything You Need To Know (Because I found this site while lurking the America’s Next Top Model Past Seasons forum. It seemed somehow right.)

Three books, to the Margaret Sherry Memorial Library. Judging by the wishlist, you must have a fabulous YA librarian — I’m going to have to check out Stolarz myself. :-)

Just Listen – Sarah Dessen;
Blue Is For Nightmares – Laurie Faria Stolarz; and
Drywall : Professional Techniques for Great Results – Myron R. Ferguson

I’ve also spread the word to the LJ community that spun-off from the Josh and Donna: Keytus Interruptus thread on the West Wing TWoP board. We have at least one librarian, so I hope some other folks give in her honor.

As a Mississippi resident and someone who has witnessed and experienced the damage firsthand, thank you so much to Pamie and Glark and to everyone who’s donated. It’s true that for a lot of people, Katrina has become New Orleans’ tragedy; while that city certainly sustained horrific damage, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was devastated also, and the effects are still reverberating throughout the entire state. Y’all are heroes for this effort to help us heal. I’m proud to join your ranks by sending the Gulfport Library a copy of Henry James’ Wings of a Dove.

I was reading pamie.com while being indecisive and found this page and realized that I would feel better about myself and the world if I donated books, knowing that public libraries often don’t get the respect or funding they deserve.

Biloxi Library is getting How to Be a Perfect Stranger: The Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook, Fourth Edition by Stuart M. Matlins (Editor), Arthur J. Magida (Editor).

A very wise, lovely old man once told me, “I believe our treasure is in Heaven; but if you’re going to build up a treasure on Earth, make it books.”

I donated John Steinbeck : Novels and Stories, 1932-1937 : The Pastures of Heaven / To a God Unknown / Tortilla Flat / In Dubious Battle / Of Mice and Men (Library of America) (Hardcover)
, Writers of the American South : Their Literary Landscapes (Hardcover)
, and Creators : From Chaucer and Durer to Picasso and Disney (Hardcover) to the Gulfport Library. Even though I’m not personally enamored with Southern Writers, I thought it was only appropriate that the people of Mississippi have access to writers from their own region.

Thanks to Doppelganger for sharing this opportunity with her readers! I plan to mention it to my own (tiny) readership.

P.S. Pamie & Glark: I couldn’t figure out how to add myself to the donation map, so if you wouldn’t mind adding a “Gina” to southwest (Boise) Idaho, I’d appreciate it.

Drat you all! I’ve been lurking on TWoP for 5 years and haven’t posted, and you finally broke me down. I’ve enjoyed so many hours of reading the writing on TWoP and related sites – this time giving doesn’t seem like charity, it feels like making dinner for a friend after you’ve just gotten paid and can afford something more than chili again.

So, ever practical, I bought books not for reading but for doing — one on porches and one on decks by Better Homes & Gardens, and then one on making over kitchens and one on making over your bungalow. I got all four off Biloxi’s wishlist – how can anyone replace 39,000 books?

I chose Kiplinger’s Buying and Selling a Home and Udo Schmidt’s Building Kitchen Cabinets from the Biloxi Library’s wishlist. I figured many people would be buying homes and fixing damaged kitchens. When I approached my local library about getting books to Katrina stricken libraries, I was told I could only donate books to my library, which would sell them through Friends of the Library and “a portion of” the proceeds would be sent to the affected areas. Thank you to everyone involved in this effort for making helping libraries directly possible – and much more rewarding.

I sure hope there are some strong backs amongst the HCLS staff, because round 2 (which will ship tomorrow) contains:

The Poisonwood Bible (not purchased through Amazon, so if only one copy is sought, someone may wish to update the entry manually)
The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man
Trial and Error: The American Controversy over Creation and Evolution
American Psycho
The Cat Who Cried for Help
A Treasury of Modern Mysteries
The Empiricists: Locke, Berkley, Hume
Mystery (Peter Straub)
Hearts in Atlantis
The First Immortal
The Power of One
Foundation (Asimov)
Smilla’s Sense of Snow
Time and Again (Finney)
Rumpole and the Age of Miracles
Murder Gone Mad
Rose Madder
Foucault’s Pendulum
The Cider House Rules
From a Buick 8
The Age of Reason
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
The Merry Devils
Playtraining Your Dog

I hope these books bring the patrons as much pleasure as they have me. I could ramble on about each, but that would take time away from scouring the shelves and storage locker for more books that would benefit the library more than they will me.

What a great idea. Looking throug the lists, I really wanted to give something I knew would be enjoyed. On the Margaret Sherry Library list there they were: Richard Scarry’s Best Videos Ever! (Learning Songs, ABCs, and Counting) They were such a hit at my house that the tapes are worn out, so the kids in Biloxi should have a great time with the DVDs. I also got Elmo’s World and Sesame Street Songs too, just to spread the love a little.

When I was teenager, I spent many hours at the library and could never have imagined life without it. I was a library volunteer for four years before I moved away from my hometown.

For the teenagers about my sisters age, I added her favorite book, Among the Enemy by Margaret Peterson Haddix for the Margaret Sherry Memorial Library.

Thanks again guys for all that you do!

I donated 12 months each of National Geographic for Kids and Sports Illustrated for Kids to the West Biloxi library. I was sad to see they had to cut the subscriptions, because magazines are great for reluctant or slow readers – short, interesting articles, lots of pix, and new stuff every month!

I also pimped your site on my kidlit blog and my library school’s student organization blog. Thanks for doing this – it’s so great.

I love to read. Every room in my home has at least one bookshelf and I am surrounded by biographies, popular fiction, plays, poetry, romance novels, mysteries, theology, history, everything. But if you ask me to be narrow it down to my favorites, I guess it would be the fantasy books that I read as a child (or as an adult even if the book came from the “Young Adult Section”). So I gave the Margaret Sherry Memorial Library a selection of the DJ MacHale Pendragon series:

The Quillan Games
The Rivers of Zadaa
Black Water
Lost City of Faar
Never War
Merchant of Death

What a wonderful cause! I wish I could do more!

I bought from Orange Grove’s wishlist. I donated ‘Fahrenheit 451′ and ‘1984′ because those are classics I think everyone ought to read in their lifetime.

I donated ‘The Penderwicks : A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy’ and ‘Duck and Goose’ because, as a preschool teacher, I think every child deserves a wealth of books to read.

And finally, ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel because after reading that book and having the opportunity to hear a lecture from Wiesel himself, my life will be forever changed.

The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health

100 Questions & Answers About Migraine

One of my favorite things about libraries is how they give people free access to information on all kinds of topics, so that people are better able to make informed choices. I hope these three books will help women feel more confident about discussing their bodies and any medical issues they might have.

For Biloxi, the Oxford Book of American Poetry because people tend to forget how important poetry is.

For West Biloxi, Grizzly Man because it’s a wonderful film with a superb Richard Thompson soundtrack/featurette.

For West Biloxi, the Family Handyman Complete Do-It-Yourself Manualbecause I think people in that region will be making a lot of use of it.

For Gulfport, Vertigo a film of haunting images for a place whose images on the Web site are haunting.

For Pass Christian, Blue Shoes and Happiness {sorry, I can’t find the link for some reason} because it’s such a cheerful, good-spirited book about an unfamiliar place.

This time last year, I was teaching English at the University of Southern Mississippi’s campus in Long Beach. I had an apartment about three miles down Hwy 90 from the Pass Christian branch, and I often checked out fun books to read on a bench on the Long Beach city pier. I left Long Beach on August 27 and never went back — there was nothing left to go back to — but I am happy to be able to do something for my former students and colleagues still trying to make a go of it on the Coast.

The pier may be gone, but maybe someone can take T.C. Boyle’s Talk Talk and a folding chair down to the beach and forget FEMA, insurance, and the new hurricane season for a few hours.

Books and music – two fuels for the soul and spirit…that is why Biloxi Library is receiving The Invisible Man and The Time Machine by HG Wells, Giant Steps by John Coltrane and Original Delta Blues by Son House. All classics of their respective genres; all food for the soul, imagination and spirit.

I am a firm believer that all children should have access to the wisdom of Calvin&Hobbes. Those books certainly shaped my childhood.

So, I sent the Orange Grove library:
Something Under the Bed is Drooling
Weirdos from Another Planet
The Revenge of the Baby-sat
Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons

I like the Father’s Day idea mentioned above. So, in honor of my grandpa, who once started cold-calling people from the Belfast phone book who shared our last name, the Biloxi Library is getting some genealogy books:

Family Tree Guide Book to Europe: Your Passport to Tracing Your Genealogy Across Europe
They Became Americans: Finding Naturalization Records and Ethnic Origins

And because this was one of my all-time favorite books as a kid, and because I re-read it on the train while going to visit the relatives he finally contacted via his cold-calling, they’re also getting

The White Mountains

A TWoP Fan posted on June 16th, 2006 at 4:35 pm

Mine is a mix – The Watsons go to Birmingham (good book), Don’ let the Pigeon drive the Bus (just sounded fun for the kids), Courthouse research for family historians (I’m a passionate genealogist, so don’t want them left out), The hardest Deal of All, the Battle over school integration in Mississippi (interesting book). These are all going to the Biloxi Library, in honor of a friend who was living there at the time.

I was born in Biloxi – my dad was stationed at Keesler AFB – so when I saw the ad on TWOP, I wanted to do something. The Biloxi branch’s wish list has a lot of SF books on it, so I picked a few: Platinum Pohl: The Collected Best Stories, Speaker For The Dead, Dandelion Wine, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Rediscovery of Man: Complete Short SF Of Cordwainer Smith.” Hopefully they’ll get the Biloxi branch reopened soon!

- A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway
- Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems
- Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
- From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg

I will endeavour to do better linking in the future.

The Little House Collection Box Set – Laura Ingalls Wilder (5 books total, for whoever’s doing the math)

The Great Deluge : Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast – Douglas Brinkley

Merriam-Webster’s Spanish-English Dictionary

Thank you not only to Pam and David for setting this up but to all the previous donors for sharing their contributions and getting me more and more revved up about doing this. I also purchased By the Shores of Silver Lake for http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/registry.html/squishy/104-5878874-91 50332?%5Fencoding=UTF8&type=wishlist&id=30I209BRKV5Z0 because it’s criminal that any library not have the complete Laura Ingalls Wilder collection. The library here is only open a couple of hours a day, and is in an old church (the book return box is through an old arch-shaped window). But it has become my centre as I renew my sense of my community. I met my new neighbours at the library! And it has brought back wonderful memories of spending hours and hours in the library as a child.

I wanted to try and donate some books that were relevant to Mississippi – try and keep it local, so to speak. So, to the Biloxi library, I sent The Land by Coretta Scott King, as well as Cajun folktales by J.J. Reneaux off their wishlist. I hope they enjoy them!

I donated a copy of “Atlas Shrugged” because it’s my absolute favorite book in the world and reading it changed my life.

I also donated Paul Johnsons “Creators” because he is a fantastic historian and I wanted to give more people the opportunity to be exposed to his work.

I sent Biloxi the following from their Amazon wish list:
Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert
The Gods Of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Ringworld’s Child, by Larry Niven

Wonderful idea! I can’t tell you the thousands of books I’ve checked out from libraries over the years.

Kathy posted on June 20th, 2006 at 9:29 pm

To the Saucier Library, I sent:

The Keeping Quilt (from their wishlist), because I enjoy quilting, because I think family history is important, and because seeing it in the wishlist made me think that perhaps I can challenge the ladies in my quilting exchange to donate books as well.

I also sent:

The Hedgehog: A guide to a healthy & happy pet which is generally regarded by folks in my hedgehog rescue group (www.hedgehogwelfare.org) to be one of the best and most accurate books out there, and in the hopes that others from that group will send additional copies to additional libraries in the HCLS.

Then three books from an author from my home state– good chapter-a-night books for kids my nieces’ ages, and good reading for everyone up to my age.
The Goose Girl
Enna Burning
River Secrets

These are books of the type I’ve loved from age ten to the present. And although neither I or Emily has had a chance to read Enna Burning yet because we’re waiting for the paperback, I’m sending it on to the Gulf Coast hoping someone there will enjoy it on our behalf!

River Secrets doesn’t release until September of this year, but I’m sure the HCLS will be glad to get a brand-new book in the fall, when they’ve already catalogued & shelved all the generosity of the summer book drive.

Consider sending a not-yet-released book– I bet they’ll love you later!

I’m also going to ALA in New Orleans this weekend, and hope to see the Harrington County librarians there. It’s very impressive they are presenting a poster … I would consider the state of affairs there a sign from above that I deserve to not present at ALA this year. :)

I am from Long Beach Mississippi, though I haven’t lived there for fifteen years, and my whole family went through Katrina. There are so many things that remain to be done to get people’s lives back to normal; mostly I contribute to personal efforts among my family and friends. But this book drive is a wonderful idea and I’m sending a couple of kids’ books from the Margaret Sherry Wish List (How do Dinosaur’s Clean their Rooms? by Yolen and Babushka’s Doll by Polacco) because these are some of my own small children’s favorite books. Children on the coast need everything they can get to make life normal, such as books to expand their world beyond the pretty challenging environment they face right now. Also I sent one of my own teenage favorites, The Subterraneans by Kerouac, for someone like me to enjoy.

Hi Pamie, Dewey et al.:

Long time reader of Pamie.com and TWoP and donor to the annual book drive. Every summer I try to re-read a couple of books by Jane Austen. Truly, she is the perfect beach/pool/cabin/airplane/train/stuck in line waiting for tickets author. Since I’m sure there’s probably many other Austen fans in Mississippi who are jonesin’ for a Jane fix as well, the Gulfport Library is receiving:

Emma
Sense & Sensibility
Pride & Prejudice

(They weren’t on the library wishlist, but I might just send them Persuasion,Northanger Abby and Mansfield Park for the hell of it later.)

Thanks for this yearly reminder of what’s important, appreciation for what we have and rededication to a cool and underappreciated resource — libraries! As ever, Pamie et al, you rock!

Oh, good, Pass Christian’s wish list was empty the last time I looked, but their staff has been busy, and I was able to get them a few of their desired adult fiction items:

Darkness & Light: A Frank Elder Mystery
Orbit: A Novel – John Harvey
False Impression – Jeffrey Archer
Vanished – Karen Robards
The Betrayed – David Hosp
Kingdom Come – Tim Green

I picked titles that were in stock so that they’d arrive quickly. I was glad to see lots of mystery/crime fiction titles, since that’s a genre for which I have special fondness.

I particularly wanted to donate to Pass Christian because of a memorable vacation I had there with someone very dear to me. It was such a lovely town and one of the areas that most broke my heart when I saw the destruction. Take heart, library people, and good luck with the rebuilding effort.

For be it for me to downplay the importance of books but, for me, the best thing about my library while growing up was beingable to check out albums and tapes (yes, this back in the day) that helped to expand my musical tastes.

So, in that spirit, I’ve ordered the following cd’s from Biloxi’s wish list:
. Duke Ellington – Ellington At Newport 1956
. Ella James – Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection
. The Very Best of T-Bone Walker
. Breaking Out of New Orleans 1922-1929 Box Set
. Cajun Music: The Essential Collection
. Sonny Rollins – Saxophone Colossus
. Count Basie – The Best of Early Basie
. BB King – Live at the Regal

As someone who read through complete libraries growing up, married to someone who did the same thing, we’re sending some classics to the Biloxi Library:

Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe

and my favorite book:

Rascal, by Sterling North

Laura H. posted on June 24th, 2006 at 9:30 am

The lists are a little sparse in my favorite fiction, so I sent Biloxi two movies – “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Good Night and Good Luck.”

Had to hold off on donating until a job situation was resolved, but now the hub’s raise is Harrison County’s gain! I haev sent the Gulfport Library copies of “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand and “Angle of Repose” by Wallace Stegner–no special reason, they were just at the top of the list.

From the Biloxi library wishlist, I sent:

Three Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books, because I loved them as a kid.
Then Again, Maybe I Won’t, because every library should have Judy Blume.
Where’s My Teddy, because it looked cute.
and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, because it’s a classic.

I hope to give more soon!

In honor of my visit with Sharon yesterday at ALA, I decided to go Amazon shopping again … I sent rubber cement (who doesn’t love shopping for office supplies!) and Raising the Sensory Child (a request from one of their customers – it must be hard not to be able to buy books you know someone specific needs).

You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Roman Gladiator!

You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Pyramid Builder: A Hazardous Job You’d Rather Not Have

You Wouldn’t Want to Be an American Colonist: A Settlement You’d Rather Not Start

I also donated matching funds to my local libary here in Madison, WI, which is expanding.

I’m not normally a laugh-out-loud person, but this book was so hilariously funny, I laughed until I cried. It’s that good. Everyone should have the joy of reading about Jerry and his marvelously eccentric family and animals.

Unfortunately, being a broke recent college graduate means I can’t do as much as I would like, but I did buy the Biloxi Library a copy of The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, because 1) I loved it when I was a little girl and 2) children have to have books. I don’t know what I would have done without my public library when I was a child, and it breaks my heart to think of the kids in Mississippi with nothing to read.

As a contract author for KidHaven Press in San Diego, I’ve always wanted to give back to my local library with a complimentary copy of my latest title. When I read about the Harrison library system on this web site, I wondered why I’d never thought of Mississippi libraries before. So, knowing nothing about Pamie or the Dewey drive, I went straight to the library web site and asked Sharon if she would like any of the extra copies of my books. It feels a bit like bragging, but she was happy to be offered them! I sent one or more copies of 11 books just yesterday. I feel good, and even though I didn’t go through the Dewey site to do it, you get any the credit that is due. Thanks!

That said I would suggest emailing Sharon at HCLS if you think they simply didn’t know there was a better version of it and you’d like to donate that. :)

In honor of my mother, who is an elementary school librarian (and for that matter, my father, who patiently read “Wings on Things” approximately a bazillion times with me when I was first learning to read), I went the children’s book route. Plus, I could pick books I loved that way.

So, to the Saucier Library:
Zella, Zack, and Zodiac by Bill Peet. (I must confess, I don’t specifically remember this book too clearly, but more Bill Peet is always good.)
and
Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. (This is one of those books that I read when I was younger, and that really stuck with me.)

And to the Biloxi Library:
Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones. (One of the books I read so many times growing up that my copy is in tatters.)

Thanks to Glark and Pamie and everyone at Twop. Not only do y’all entertain me, and provide some justification for my occasionally obsessive tv habits, you also keep offering me the chance to be a slightly better person, and that’s always a plus.

I sent some childrens’ books to the Pass Christian library: from their wish list, I Remember Miss Perry; and two of my personal favorites, Are You My Mother? and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

I chose Pass Christian because it’s the hometown of Robin Roberts (from ABC News) and I was impressed with the very personal but non-exploitative reporting she did from there, post-Katrina.

Gilmore Girls – The Complete First Season DVD

Veronica Mars – The Complete First Season DVD

Why Moms Are Weird by Pamela Ribon

Gilmore Girls is the reason I discovered TWoP in the first place while Veronica Mars is one of my current favorite shows which has a strong TWoP connection. Why Moms Are Weird was not on their wishlist, but I figured Pamie deserves at least one book sale for helping organize this.

After watching one of these movies for the first time in a long time last night, I had to donate the Back to the Future Trilogy http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006AL1E/qid=1151942493/sr=8-1/ref= pd_bbs_1/104-8860566-8487126?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130 to the Gulfport library (still fantastic, 21 years later!) And because the trilogy set was amazingly cheap, I added on When Harry Met Sally http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00003CXDC/qid=1151942564/sr=1-1/ref= sr_1_1/104-8860566-8487126?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130, because everyone should be able to watch Meg Ryan fake an orgasm over a sandwich.

I will be spending less time in my local bookstore and more time in my local library after making an enormous job change and libraries were the one place I always, always felt at home as a kid. I can’t imagine not having my local library, and after reading Westerfeld’s trilogy, I can’t imagine any library not having those books for kids and teens to read, so it works out well for all involved.

Feeling a bit down today and figured one way to feel better was to send a box of books to Biloxi. That’s better than buying a bunch of stuff I don’t have room for anyway right? So I sent:

Forever Barbie : The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll – M. G. Lord;

Hello Kitty Hello USA! : A Celebration of All Fifty States – Higashi Glaser;

The Book Thief – Markus Zusak;

Beauty – Sheri S. Tepper;

Dreamland (P.S.) – Kevin Baker

PostSecret : Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives – Frank Warren;

Meltdown! – Justin Roberts;

Cakes (Maida Heatter’s Classic Library) – Maida Heatter; (from their wishlist)

I’m a librarian, so I love, love, love that a mainstream television snark site would push such a great book drive! “Dewey” has never looked quite so cool. The ALA should license the image (you can find info on copyright in the 344s).

I just randomly chose items on the main library’s wish list. I figure the librarians there know what their members read and like.

JeanSheridan posted on July 4th, 2006 at 1:14 am

Thought I did, but I really don’t need another new work outfit. Keeping in mind the expansive and all-encompassing mission of libraries, I figured I’d send Pass Christian some books I personally know nothing about and would never in a million years read. But obviously someone will, so good on them.

Four books from the Sons of Encouragement Bible series:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0842382682/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-02627 50-3196948?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=283155

For the six-year-olds among us, First Grade Stinks, and Miss Mingo and the First Day of School:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763624101/ref=wl_it_dp/102-0262750-3 196948?%5Fencoding=UTF8&colid=12XPV4HRRZ21H&coliid=I20YJFSJMM5BE1&v=gl ance&n=283155

Pass Christian didn’t ask for, but are also getting copies of two new releases I recently checked out from my own (thankfully still intact) local library:
Heat: An Amateur’s Adventures as Kitchen Slave, and The Last Assassin by Babby Eisler.

Jean Anderson posted on July 4th, 2006 at 6:41 am

Okay! So, I had trouble finding books that I could actually send (I had to buy from amazon.co.uk and so a lot of the titles weren’t there, or weren’t there in hardcover or weren’t there for six weeks..!) but even so, I managed to get something together:

Saucier Library is getting The Wright 3 by Blue Balliet http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0439693675/ref=wl_it_dp/102-1418849-7 008905?%5Fencoding=UTF8&colid=1Z0619ZL108BR&coliid=I31KLBBLCLIWNH&v=gl ance&n=283155
Which was on their wishlist. And still is, because I believe I have just bought a book that came from the US, was shipped to the UK, and is now getting shipped to the US again. Which amuses me greatly!

And also, Araminta Spook: The Sword in the Grotto and Araminta Spook: My Haunted House by Angie Sage because they are LOVELY.

For Orange Grove Library, I sent Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, because a prettier book I am yet to see, and Pride and Prejudice (which is in honour of the lovely Sharon Davis who took time out of her day to answer my enquiry).

And then I got excited and went back to the Saucier Library, and pre-ordered them Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer and The Murder of Bindy MacKenzie by Jaclyn Moriarty. Bindy Mackenzie is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I would have loved it when I was 13, and I love it now.

I donated all of those to thank the ladies at my local library (Solihull Central) who were there in my childhood and spent time out of their days every Saturday to talk to this shy kid who loved books.

“Hug” to Margaret Sherry

Because its one of the loveliest books in the world and makes me smile whenever I see it.

Tough Plants for Southern Gardens and Passalong Plants, because my father is always looking longly at pictures of the wonderful things which can be grown in the South but would never survive in Northern Europe. Also Christmas Trolls, Hedgie’s Surprise, Aladdin and Other Tales from the Arabian Nights (Everyman’s Library Children’s Classics), Froggy’s Best Christmas (Froggy), Bernie Magruder and the Bats in the Belfry (Bernie Magruder) and The Real Story : A Guide to Nonfiction Reading Interests (Genreflecting Advisory Series) because, even though she’s retired from teaching, my mother has never lost her passion for books, especially children’s literature.

My boyfriend is currently working in the Gulfport/Biloxi area, cleaning up from the hurricanes. I recently went down to visit him, and seeing as how I’m a poor workin’ girl, I donated my time instead of books or money. I was able to work in the (unfortunatly destroyed) downtown Biloxi library, helping to re-check in boxes upon boxes of books that were sent away to be restored. I was also able to meet and work w/ two of the many wonderful Harrison County librarians, Carrie Bellais and Lucienne Gautier. They were awesome, and acted as my un-offical tour guides for the downtown area. I was also able to meet Sharon Davis, who is the sweetest person ever. I have to give her enormous props for the work she does over seeing the putting of the libraries back together. I had a blast helping out, and plan to do so now each time I go down. All thanks to Dewey Donation!

AB Chao’s interview with Greg Berlanti on TWoP today inspired me to send the “Everwood – The Complete First Season” DVD to Gulfport, even though it was not on their wishlist. I also included the “Veronica Mars – The Complete Second Season” DVD from their wishlist to get the free shipping.

I then noticed Orange Grove had a special request for “Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson” by Louise Rennison so I sent it to them along with with “Away Laughing on a Fast Camel: Even More Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson)” by the same author and “The Office – Season One (US/NBC Version)” DVD.

Chris decided that Taxi Driver had the most entertainment value (out of the small list I proposed). Gulfport is close to our hearts since Chris used to have the Gulfport County Clerk’s office as one of his clients.

As a child I loved going to the library and spending hours reading the books and reviewing the titles. And after looking at the Biloxi Library’s pictures my heart ached. So of course I have to send something for the little lambies to read. I picked three titles from the Biloxi Library’s wish list:
Guess How Much I Love You: Vietnamese and English
Minnie and Moo: The Case of the Missing Jelly Donut (I Can Read Book 3)
Wemberly Worried

From my friend Ali:

Hi Pam!

I hadn’t been to your site lately, and today I was instantly guilted
into donating books via Dewey.

I bought C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, and Norman Maclean’s audio CD of A River Runs Through It.

I chose the Pass Christian library, because I used to get telephone orders from that town when I worked at the JCPenney catalog center in the 1990s, where I first met Catherine Zarate’s husband, who also worked there, who also happened to know you, and then I met you at IBM… and so it’s that whole Kevin Bacon loop. Not only that, but Chuy rhymes with Dewey.

I sent the following to the Biloxi library:

- Private Eye-Lashes: Radio’s Lady Detectives
- The Great Voyages of Zheng He: English/Vietnamese

I selected the English/Vietnamese book because I know there’s a large Vietnamese community in the heavily affected areas of Biloxi.

I selected the other because it sounded like an interesteding read.

I’ve been to this area and have an idea of what they’re dealing with down there. Thanks for putting this drive together, Glark!

“The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 13)” by Lemony Snicket

The only thing I am worried about is, the Lemony Snicket book isn’t released until October 18th, and according to my order form because I selected the Free Shipping nothing will ship until October 18th (it will all be combined in one package). If I didn’t get a job, I would volunteer somehow to help out. Because no matter how depressing and ugly unemployment and job searches are, they are NOTHING compared to living through Katrina and its aftermath.

Last month I finally got a job – a great one — and I just received my first paycheck. So now I am giving back. West Biloxi Library is receiving two dvds:

If you can give, give more!

We began this last year with The Red Cross efforts after Hurricane Katrina and have continued it ever since. It has been a wonderful way to talk our boss into a casual Friday as well as encourage philanthropy in our little office. Since our parents, Don and Maureen, do not want us to buy them Christmas gifts, we decided to donate books in their name to the Biloxi Library. They actually lived the first years of their married life in Biloxi while our father was in the service, so the city will always have a special place in their hearts. Moreover, no one taught us to appreciate the love of reading and libraries more than the two of them.

We have donated the following in their names:

Kirsten’s Story Collection: for Mom, especially, because she always drove us to the bookstore to get the newest release in whatever series we were reading at the time

Blandings Castle: for Dad, especially, because no one loves Jeeves and Wooster more

Games, How to Play, and How to Win: for both of them, because of the countless hours they spent playing cards, Memory, Yahtzee, Racko, Sorry, Scrabble, (and every other game in the basement) with us over the years

Amy & Molly posted on December 11th, 2006 at 9:59 pm

Because it’s Christmas and my dad’s family is WAY into it and I hate wrapping and paying shipping and I hate the post office and half of my family seems to be moving in the next month anyway so I’ve gotten all these emails saying “WE DON’T NEED ANYTHING BULKY!!!!!”, I decided this year it would have to be a theme that would fit all of them. But what? By nature, whatever one family member likes, another hates so what will fit them all? Crazily, the answer came this very morning, a very late (or is it just seasonal?) December 18th with the book drive. I tried to get books that reflected the family member whose name I was giving it in, but in the cases where that didn’t work, I will write a letter saying something along the lines of “HEY. It’s for charity!” But seriously, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing you guys are doing. So I got the following:

Biloxi Public Library
Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life Lessons at the World’s Premier School for Exotic Animal Trainers (okay, that one’s from me. I totally want to read it.)
Pyramids (DK Eyewitness Books)
Photography (DK Eyewitness Books)
Blues Masters: The Very Best of T-Bone Walker (CD)
A Bear Called Paddington
Jackson, MS (Images of America)

Pass Christian Library
The Year of Magical Thinking
Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (for my step-grandfather, the ex-HR man)

Gulfport Library
