Donating funds to Rockhouse Foundation

Want to help the kids at the Negril All Age School stock the new community library? All you have to do is click and give. Okay, you’re going to need a credit card. But then, just click and give and then sit back and let the warm rush of being awesome flow through you. Be a hero. Click and give.
Not hard enough for you? Do a push-up or two. Do ten. Then click and give. Ooh, you look good when you’re all red-faced and sweaty. Also, that click just burned three thousand calories. Seriously. Charity calories burn much harder.
We’ve made it easy for you to choose your donor level, ranging from a single children’s book at $6.99, all the way to one of them fancy-pants computers. You can also write-in a gift amount of your choice, if you’re more of a non-conformist type. Gifts can be made in someone else’s name, be completely anonymous, or you can take the credit all to yourself. It’s your money, after all! (Note: it is no longer your money once you donate. Someone should have explained that to you earlier.)
This gift is 100% tax deductible. We chose this click and give method of funding cash donations to the Negril All Age Library because a dollar goes a long way in Jamaica, which will provide even more books and services. Going our normal Amazon.com route would tax your gift with additional shipping and fees (Trust us; we tried to figure it out. It is damn near impossible to ship even a spelling book or a power strip over there without it costing three times as much).
The Rockhouse Foundation is a New York based, IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Rockhouse Hotel and its owners, in addition to being key donors to the Foundation, underwrite all of the Foundation’s administrative expenses. That means every cent of every donation goes directly to Jamaicans in need. But it also means: check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program.
Donating books to Children’s Institute

But some of you old-school Dewey donors might prefer our more traditional method: Surprising the crap out of librarians. In celebration of the end of the writers strike (WHEEEEE!), and in order to give back to the community hit hard by the fourteen-week industry shutdown, we found a library in south Los Angeles in need. But they don’t know about us. Pretty sneaky, sis.
You don’t have to send pencils to media moguls anymore. Instead, you can help to inspire and create the future generations of writers, thinkers and leaders who will someday take down The Man. It all starts right here.
We found a bunch of wish lists on Amazon. Click to choose which books you’d like to send:
- New and Classic Preschool Books Wish List
- Bilingual Preschool Books Wish List
- Multicultural Preschool Books Wish List
- Early Literacy (Infants to 3yr) Books Wish List
- Fatherhood Books Wish List
- Motherhood Books Wish List
- Middle School Books Wish List
- Grade School Readers
- Educational DVDs for Kids
- ESL and Parenting Books
Go! Go send surprise books! It’s so much fun. Really, it’s strangely addictive. Note that the shipping address on Amazon will show up as Alicia Fox, Los Angeles.
Want to send a pile of books but would rather use an Independent bookseller? Have a pile of age-appropriate book donations that you’d like to send directly through media mail? Librarian Alicia Fox would appreciate your donation. Send it over to:
Alicia Fox
c/o Children’s Institute, Inc.
711 S. New Hampshire Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90005
But don’t forget to tell us what you sent so we can add you to the donor tally!
Don’t forget to share your love!
As always, please let us know what you sent and why. Part of the fun of Dewey is sharing stories about our love of reading, of books, and of libraries that made a difference in our lives. We’ll be posting stats and letters from the Rockhouse donations as quickly as we can, but the only way we can track the donations to the Childrens Institute is if you let us know.
Okay, so please spread the word, tell your friends, link your blogs, bug your co-workers and most importantly, click and give. Dewey loves you, and so do we.
Oh, and if you haven’t heard: donating to Dewey gives you some kind of freaky good Karma, so you might want to work on your mantra or study your vision board or whatever new-age fad you’re into these days before you make that final click. Good things will happen! And that’s a promise.
Thanks in advance for your awesomocity.
