Rockhouse Update!

Peter from the Rockhouse Foundation writes in with an update and wants you to know that you rock!

We’re blown away by the generosity and enthusiasm of you guys and you many readers.  I always had faith, but seeing the long-gestating project come to fruition is so exciting.  I’ve attached a “before” photo of the front and back of the library. A little local history – the structure initially was the West End Police Station but was converted into the community library many years ago.  Imagine the perspective and pride of some of Negril’s older residents once the project is completed.

Even though Negril is known the world over as a beautiful, laid back vacation spot for haggard , over-worked, recreationally deprived tourists, the local story is more about inadequate capacity to meet limitless need… the library is no exception.  Everyday elementary and high school students compete for limited technology, outdated titles and overworked staff.  Everyone does their absolute best with what’s on hand.  But a new library full of books, computers, furniture and the good vibes that accompany it all, is going to create a groundswell of community appreciation and, more importantly, unlock a world of information, knowledge and beauty unthinkable a few months ago.  Ground-breaking is currently expected on or around April 1, with a grand opening expected sometime during the summer.  As construction gets under way, we’ll continue to send along photos and feedback.  At the rate donations are coming in we’re going to have to ponder a second level. :)

Thank you for helping make this all happen.  The Rockhouse Foundation and everyone associated with the project is profoundly grateful.

Peter also sent along a video featuring Senior Library Assistant Garreth Williams chatting about the future of the Negril Community Library.
