Share the Love! Tell Us What You Donated! (2008)

rhf-girls.jpg

Did you just do something heroic? Did you just send a gift to a library in need?

THANK YOU.

And please, let us know what you sent. And if you’re feeling talky, Dewey listens like a bartender who’s got hours to go before last call… on open mic night. Feel free to tell us what got you here, and why you gave. Feel the love.

Thank you! You just made someone smile.

If you bought something off a wish list please copy and paste the URL into your post — it will turn into a link automagically! Note that your post will appear after we’ve had a change to read it over and add info to our book drive tally (we will add the shirt sales after they close on Feb 29). Rockhouse Foundation donations should send a receipt directly to us, so we’ll be able to update the monetary numbers. But don’t let that stop you from posting below.

I wanted to make sure both organizations benefited, so I gave $50 to Rockhouse and the following books to the Children’s Institute:

    http://www.amazon.com/Friends-.....038;sr=8-1
    http://www.amazon.com/Goodbye-.....038;sr=8-2
    http://www.amazon.com/Rose-Oth.....038;sr=8-5
Like I’m going to deprive a child the opportunity to read the literary works of Madonna? I’m surprised these hadn’t been snapped up before!
    http://www.amazon.com/Beatrix-.....038;sr=1-1
Another classic that I’m stunned hadn’t been donated yet. Not growing up with Peter Cottontail would have been one of the great tragedies of my life!
    http://www.amazon.com/Walter-F.....038;sr=1-3
A book about a farting dog on the beach. Exactly what I would have wanted to read at that age!
    http://www.amazon.com/I-Freddy.....038;sr=1-1
    http://www.amazon.com/Book-Gol.....038;sr=1-2
    http://www.amazon.com/Freddy-R....._b_title_5
    http://www.amazon.com/Haunting....._b_title_2
    http://www.amazon.com/Golden-H....._b_title_3
And I got these because they reminded me of a modern day version of “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” series, which was among one of my favorites. Ralph the Mouse!

  2. Shannon

I went surfing over to see what might have been added to the middle school book list, and what do you know, Dario had requested all of the “Bone” series by Jeff Smith-one of my all time favorites. (Yes, I adore comics!) Will someone else please, please, please help him get the whole series? Because I bought:

    Bone #1:Out from Boneville-Jeff Smith
    Owly #1-Andy Runton
Amelia Rules #1 by Jimmy Gownley

All 3 wonderful graphics novels for kids.

    This is amazingly addictive!

  3. Judy Rasetti

21 to the Rockhouse Foundation. When I have more time I’ll choose from the Amazon wishlists. Thanks for doing such a great job with this!

  4. Chelsea Lane

I, like so many others, took advantage of Amazon’s 4-for-3 offer, and sent the Children’s Institute:

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles

    The Westing Game

    The Goose Girl

    Peter and the Starcatchers

Just a few of my favorites!

  5. Sarah Earnest

I’m so glad I found your organization — this is a GREAT program. Thank you!

I donated to the Children’s Institute:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060540745

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1402732627

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1426301332

As well as “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin (one of my all time favorites) and “Ballet Shoes” by Noel Streatfield (which I absolutely loved around 5th grade).

I wish I could do more, but there’s always next year! :)

  6. queasy

I gave $100 to Rockhouse for books and picked the following off the middle school list. No reason except that I chose mostly picture books last year. I remember my junior high years as being full of high drama, mystery, and fiction of my own making, so selected titles that fit with the theme.

Bone Volume 4: The Dragonslayer – Jeff Smith

The Dark Stairs R/I (Herculeah Jones Mystery) – Betsy Byars

. . . If You Lived When There Was Slavery in America – Anne Kamma

Herculeah Jones Reissue #2 (Herculeah Jones Mystery) – Betsy Byars

Grim Tuesday (Keys to the Kingdom, Book 2) – Garth Nix

The Keys to the Kingdom, Book 1: Mister Monday – Garth Nix

. . . If You Lived at the Time of Martin Luther King – Ellen Levine

If You Grew Up With Abraham Lincoln (If You.) – Ann Mcgovern

If You Lived In Colonial Times (If You.) – Ann Mcgovern

. . . If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 – Ann McGovern

If You Traveled West In A Covered Wagon (If You.) – Ellen Levine

Sterling Point Books: The Barbary Pirates (Sterling Point Books) – C. S. Forester

Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy – Seymour Reit

The Black Tower (Herculeah Jones) – Betsy Byars

Sterling Point Books: Joan of Arc: Warrior Saint (Sterling Point Books) – Jay Williams

If You Lived When Women Won Their Rights (If You Lived…) – Anne Kamma

Sir Thursday (The Keys To The Kingdom, Book 4) – Garth Nix

If You Lived At The Time Of The American Revolution (If You.) – Kay Moore

Drowned Wednesday (Keys to the Kingdom, Book 3) – Garth Nix

Sterling Point Books: The Stout-Hearted Seven: Orphaned on the Oregon Trail (Sterling Point Books) – Neta Lohnes Frazier

Sterling Point Books: Amelia Earhart: Flying Solo (Sterling Point Books) – John Burke

  8. Nan Ferrone

I just contributed to the Rockhouse Foundation Book Drive; I wish I could give more! I am a former Peace Corps volunteer and my site was the Negril All Age School from 2004-2006. I could gush all day long about the fabulous and wonderful work Peter and the Rockhouse Foundation does for the school, as I have seen evidence of it firsthand. Improving the library will be so helpful to the local people of Negril. Thank you for helping this truly terrific organization!

  9. Shannon

    To librarian Alicia-

You rock! I saw that you added the rest of the “Owly” and “Amelia Rules” series to the middle school wish list in my honor……..that is so awesome! Thank you!

  10. Jessica

I chose four books from the Middle School wish list. I chose this age because I know it can be a particularly tough one for kids (I remember those years well, but not fondly!).

    So here they are:

    Coraline

    Molly Moon Stops the World

    George Washington’s Socks

    Time Stops for No Mouse

  11. I love this idea! I just donated four X-Men comics and I posted and linked this whole thing on my blog, too, so all my friends and fam will see and donate, too.

    Great job, as always!!!

  12. Maggie

I sent a bunch of Gary Soto books to the Children’s Institute, since I remember reading him in college and liking his stuff. Here’s what I sent:

“Baseball in April and Other Stories”

    “Taking Sides”

    “Local News: Stories”

    “Neighborhood Odes”

    “Petty Crimes”

“A Fire in My Hands: Revised and Expanded Edition”

    “Help Wanted: Stories”

    “Canto familiar”

    “Accidental Love”

  13. I couldn’t stay away. Plus, Patrick requested Super Grover, so I filled a few specific requests this time!
    # Another Monster at the End of This Book (Big Bird’s Favorites Brd Bks) – Jon Stone

    # If You Traveled on the Underground Railroad – Ellen Levine

    # Max’s Birthday (Wells, Rosemary. Max Board Books.) – Rosemary Wells

    # Sterling Biographies: Albert Einstein: The Miracle Mind (Sterling Biographies) – Tabatha Yeatts

  14. Thank you to these fantastic, generous donors (one of whom is from Sweden!):

    $50 — Anonymous Donor

    $150 — Barbara Massey

    $50 — Sara Gunnerud

That’s $500! Thank you so much.

  15. Joni Lovell

I love to read and have encouraged my neices and nephews over the years to enjoy picking up a book and escaping for an afternoon. I stumbled over your book drive through the “Go Fug” blog and am happy to contribute to this cause. I purchased 18 books off of the CCI – Grade School and Middle School lists for $100. Here are my purhases:

-Sterling Point Books: Geronimo: Wolf of the Warpath (Sterling Point Books)
-Sterling Biographies: George Washington: An American Life (Sterling Biographies)
-Sterling Point Books: Path to the Pacific: The Story of Sacagawea (Sterling Point Books)
-Down on the Farm (Green Light Readers. Level 1)
-Lily B. on the Brink of Cool (Lily B.)
-Tick Tock (Green Light Readers Level 1)
-Todd’s Box (Green Light Readers Level 1)
    -Penny from Heaven
-The Berry Best Friends’ Picnic (Strawberry Shortcake)
-Strawberry Shortcake’s Show-and-Tell Surprise: All Aboard Reading Station Stop 1 (Strawberry Shortcake)
    -Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6)

-Sterling Biographies: Thomas Jefferson: Architect of Freedom (Sterling Biographies)

    Keep up the great work!

  16. Sarah M.

Man, I just can’t help myself, so I’m coming back for a second round. I saw the US Presidents books listed on the wish list, and was transported back to my 6th grade self when we had to write reports on the US Presidents, and I chose the most random ones I could find (meaning: I had never heard of them). So in their honor, I donated:

    - Grover Cleveland: Twenty-Second and Twenty-Fourth President 1885-1889, 1893-1897 (Getting to Know the US Presidents)

    - Franklin Pierce: Fourteenth President 1853-1857 (Getting to Know the US Presidents)

    - Martin Van Buren: Eighth President 1837-1841 (Getting to Know the US Presidents)

    - Millard Fillmore: Thirteenth President 1850-1853 (Getting to Know the US Presidents)

    - John Tyler: Tenth President 1841-1845 (Getting to Know the US Presidents)

Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt will get plenty of mention in the classroom, so let’s give Grover and Millard their time in the spotlight too…

  17. Thank you to:

    $35 — Anonymous Donor

$10 — Anonymous Donor, on behalf of Olivia.

$50 — Alicia Lawrence, on behalf of Robert E. Lawrence. “Books are wonderful companions. My trips to the library are a highlight of my week.”

  18. Sarah Day

Dewey is so great! I love donating books. I have sent the following titles from the Grade School Readers list:

    http://www.amazon.com/Two-Home.....038;sr=8-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Sissy-Du.....038;sr=1-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Unstoppa.....038;sr=1-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Whos-Fam.....038;sr=1-1

    http://www.amazon.com/National.....038;sr=8-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Our-Coun.....038;sr=1-1

I picked the last two because the note on Amazon said they were requested by Jennifer, age 9. I’m a sucker for a nine year requesting books.

  19. JennieD

Because Shannon so warmly complimented librarian Alicia (she does rock), I decided to go ahead and buy a few more books. I sent volumes 2, 3 and 4 of the “Owly” series, and then to get over $25 and get free shipping I added a Finding Nemo bath book.

This is my favorite kind of book shopping.

Yay, 4-for-3 deals! Yay, Julie Andrews! Yay, books!

I also sent $50 to Rockhouse, and will be sending $50 each quarter. $50 is the minimum my employer will match, so consider that $400 this year from me!

  22. BOOKS FOR EVERYONE! Ok, well, one book for one library so far from me. But it is a start and look what everyone has done so far! This is a great cause and I’m so pleased to be a part of it.

Thanks, pamie, for getting me involved.

  23. I sent over three books that my kindergarteners loved deeply…

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/summary/edit.html?ie=UTF8&orderID=102-5452885-7724209

  24. Thank you!

    $13.99 — Krista Bialo

$50 (quarterly!) — Maria Wonsetler (Thanks, Pooh!)

$100 — Emily Kunhardt, in memory of Barbara Greenstein.

  25. Ever since Tina Fey reminded us that bitches get stuff done, I’ve been getting reacquainted with my inner feminist and remembering the very empowering books I read as a little girl in the early ’70s, when everything seemed possible.

So in the spirit of raising a generation of feisty women and enlightened men, I’m sending these books to the Children’s Institute:

    * Women Daredevils – Julia Cummins
    * Rabble Rousers: Twenty American Women Who Made a Difference – Cheryl Harness
    * Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women – Cheryl Harness

Yay, Dewey! Thanks for doing this again.

  26. Danielle Hirschhorn

I’m a current library student and thought this was a much better thing to put my Amazon gift card towards than another DVD I’ll be sick of in a month. I purchsed the following for the school in LA from a few of their wish lists:

“Come Here, Tiger! (Green Light Readers Level 1)” by Alex Moran

“Sid’s Surprise (Green Light Readers Level 1)” by Candace Carter

“My Robot (Green Light Readers Level 2)” by Eve Bunting

“The Picnic (Green Light Readers Level 1)” by David K. Williams

“Against the Empire (Star Wars: Last of the Jedi, Book 8)” by Jude Watson

“The Berenstain Bears and the Bully” by Stan Berenstain

“I’m a Big Brother” by Joanna Cole

“I’m a Big Sister” by Joanna Cole

This is such a wonderful thing that you’ve organized and thank you for letting me be a part of helping kids get access to books!

  27. Michael

I noticed that there are a lot of recently added highest priority items remaining on the wishlists and I didn’t want to miss a chance to win something cute and homemade from AB Chao, so I sent the following:

    Meet the Letters DVD
    Meet the Numbers DVD
    Meet the Colors DVD
    Meet the Shapes DVD
    Meet the Sight Words DVD
If You Give a Pig a Party (Spanish Edition): Si le haces una fiesta a una cerdita by Laura Numeroff
Keepsake Storybook Collection (Spanish) (I Love You) by Scholastic
Read and Rise by Sandra Pickney
Brown Bear and Friends Board Book Gift Set by Bill Martin and Eric Carle

  28. Judi Mahaney

I am a long-time fan of TWOP, The Fug Girls, and Pamie and this is the first year I’ve been able to donate. I’ve seen how even the smallest child can be affected by books so I sent the Children’s Institute:
    Lamaze Where’s Caterpillar
    Baby’s Day: Cloth Book
    Lamaze Peekaboo, I Love You

  29. Thank you:

    $50 — Anonymous Donor

$13.99 — Judi Mahaney, in memory of Richard Mahaney.

    $25 — Anonymous Donor

  30. I love y’all! As a lifelong Mississippian, I was deeply touched by the efforts to help the coastal libraries after Katrina. As a college student who works with preschoolers part-time, all of the children’s books on the wish lists are very close to my heart. Though funds are short (I’m studying abroad in England this semester), I really wanted to help out, and I finally settled on:

    http://www.amazon.com/Smithson.....0789484536

I settled on this one once I read the blurb that a 9-year-old girl who was learning about presidents had requested it. I clicked purchase immediately while trying not to tear up.

Please, PLEASE, keep up the good work. I can’t think of anything more amazing than encouraging young readers and touching their lives.

  31. Phew! I waited so long, I almost missed it!

I sent the following books today:

Lyle and the Birthday Party (Lyle the Crocodile) by Bernard Waber

What Do You Do When Something Wants to Eat You? by Steve Jenkins

One Nighttime Sea by Deborah Lee Rose

Don’t You Feel Well, Sam? by Amy Hest

  32. I am powerless against the pull of 4-for-3 promotions and free shipping – and that cool book that is today’s raffle! Well, that and the great karma that is Dewey.

One more set to CII for the wee ones – my kiddos love these touch & feel books!

    Touch and Feel: Dinosaur
    Touch and Feel: Shapes
    Flip-a-Face: Baby Talk (Flip-a-Face)
    Flip-a-Face: Big Little (Flip-a-Face)

  33. Yay for:

$13.99 — Janine Weix: “I read it on neilgaiman.com and found it a great idea”

$6.99 — Theresa Carpine: “I’m making this donation because it’s the right thing to do. I support lifelong, worldwide learning.”

  34. I donated:

Babar: A Gift for Mother by Laurent de Brunhoff and

I Love You, Every Little Bit by Margaret Wang, because I remember how fun pop-up books are.

I used Barnes & Noble since I have a membership, and the shipping is free!

  35. Natalie

I donated $21.00 to the Rockhouse Foundation. I feel so warm and fuzzy on the inside. Yay for books!

  36. $21 — Anonymous Donor

    $21 — Natalie Wall

$880 — Allison Gerlach, who won the Samantha Who? set visit auction! Yay!

  37. Sarah Wells

I sent an art book and two middle school biographies to the Children’s Institute, to inspire the eye, the mind, and the spirit:

The Collins Big Book of Art: From Cave Art to Pop Art (David G. Wilkins)
    Riding Freedom (Pam Munoz Ryan)
Sterling Biographies: The Wright Brothers: First in Flight (Tara Dixon-Engel)

I’m making this donation because duh, books. And I work in a library. And I read all the time. And I want the next generation to learn to read and to write more books so that I can read those, too.

  38. I sent $25 to the Rockhouse Foundation (after hearing/reading about Dewey on Pamie’s blog). I chose Rockhouse because my boyfriend’s father is Jamaican, and he has a very large family there — including children. I don’t know if any of his small nephews, nieces, and cousins will ever be touched by the Rockhouse Foundation… but I still feel a bit of a personal connection there.

  39. To the Children’s Foundation (from Amazon wish list):

    A Box Full of Lilly

Richard Scarry’s Best Mother Goose Ever

    The Night Worker

    Down-to-Earth Guide To Global Warming

I See a Kookaburra!: Discovering Animal Habitats Around the World

The Dragon In The Ghetto Caper

  40. Kathryn

    I sent:

    Akiko and the Intergalactic Zoo

Los Trucos De Clifford / Clifford’s Tricks (Clifford the Big Red Dog (Spanish Hardcover))

    Nacho Y Lolita

The Road to Paris (Coretta Scott King Honor Books (Puffin))

I work at a shelter for homeless families so I know how great it can be for kids to have access to books!

  41. One last donation to say thank you for organizing this drive:

“Crossfire (Star Wars: Boba Fett, Book 2)” Terry Bisson; Paperback; $5.99

“Maze Of Deception (Star Wars: Boba Fett, Book 3)” Elizabeth Hand; Paperback; $5.99

“The Fight to Survive (Star Wars: Boba Fett, Book 1)” Terry Bisson; Paperback; $5.99

“Return of the Dark Side (Star Wars: Last of the Jedi, Book 6)” Jude Watson; Paperback; $5.99

“Spider-Man: The Visual Guide to the Complete Movie Trilogy”

  42. This has never happened before, but I only have one Rockhouse Donor to post.

So yay yay yay for Christine Dearden of Toronto, who gave $25!

  43. Aw, see? You guys are so fast. Just like that:

    $50 — Anonymous Donor

  44. Ok – I had to come back before it ended. This time I donated to the Children’s Institute in memory of my Mom – who taught me to read when I was very young. Although I barely knew her – she gave me the greatest gift she could, and my love of reading is owed to her.

    I donated the following:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/summary/edit.html?ie=UTF8&orderID=104-5263569-6904264

Thanks to pamie (I’ve read your blog for years) and glark for putting this together!
