Share the Love! Tell Us What You Donated! (2008)

Did you just do something heroic? Did you just send a gift to a library in need?
THANK YOU.
And please, let us know what you sent. And if you’re feeling talky, Dewey listens like a bartender who’s got hours to go before last call… on open mic night. Feel free to tell us what got you here, and why you gave. Feel the love.
Thank you! You just made someone smile.
If you bought something off a wish list please copy and paste the URL into your post — it will turn into a link automagically! Note that your post will appear after we’ve had a change to read it over and add info to our book drive tally (we will add the shirt sales after they close on Feb 29). Rockhouse Foundation donations should send a receipt directly to us, so we’ll be able to update the monetary numbers. But don’t let that stop you from posting below.

Wow! Holy moley.
I sent 12 books to the CII and it feels pretty awesome!
Four books for therapy:
“Getting Out of a Stress Mess!” “Be the Star That You Are!: A Book for Kids Who Feel Different,” “The Star: A Story to Help Young Children Understand Foster Care,” and “A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Family First.”
And I sent eight Amelia Bedelia books, because I could not get enough of those when I was a kid. That Amazon 4-for-3 deal really extends your donating power!
Had to get in one more donation of books:
Ruby’s Tea for Two (Max and Ruby)
Disney The Little Mermaid Bath Book
Katie Caught a Cold (A Dr. Hippo Story)
Hush Little Digger
OK, I kept looking at the wishlist, and I couldn’t resist sending four more for a total of 16. It’s awfully tempting to make that an even 20. Probably later today…
Anyway, this time I sent:
“Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle,” “Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle,” “Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic” and “Bratty Brothers and Selfish Sisters: All about Sibling Rivalry”
I feel like such a dork because I’m sitting here in my office crying to myself about this whole freaking drive, which is amazing. I’m so happy I can contribute. I, too, took advantage of Amazon’s 4-for-3 and ordered:
“Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia (I Can Read Book 2)”
“North”
“Ghost Circles (Bone)”
“Mad Isn’t Bad: A Child’s Book About Anger (Elf-Help Books for Kids)”
Aw, man, after reading that letter from Alicia Fox (and crying into my own coffee), I had to go donate some more books. Long live the 4-for-3 deal! I sent along:
The Fledgling – Jane Langton
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0064401219
White Lilacs – Carolyn Meyer
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0152058516
John Paul Jones: The Pirate Patriot – Armstrong Sperry
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1402736150
Fish – L.S. Matthews
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0440420210
And the last one that was high priority, for the L.A. Bridges kids’ Accelerated Reading List:
Bloomability – Sharon Creech
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0330397842
Thank you both so much for making this whole thing possible!
I donated a “hardcover book” to the Rockhouse Foundation back when the drive began and today on the last day of the drive I donated two books to Children’s Institute:
Onion John by Joseph Krumgold
How I Survived Being a Girl by Wendelin Van Draanen
Just had to donate again after reading the letter from Alicia Fox. I sent:
“How Do Birds Find Their Way? (Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2)”
“Indigo Dreams: Garden of Wellness Stories And Techniques Designed to Decrease Bullying, Anger, Anxiety & Obesity, While Promoting Self-esteem & Healthy … with children ages 5-10″
“The Goodnight Caterpillar: A Children’s Relaxation Story to improve sleep, manage stress, anxiety, anger”
The last two were marked as HIGHEST priority.
Nancy
Thank you, Kim Gaspar from Canada, who gave $35 to Rockhouse!
Last day Dewey cramming! Yay!
After realizing I should have just sent an even $900 to Rockhouse, (what kind of cheapskate can’t round up a measly twenty?) I figured I’d go send a few other things to CI from their list – specifically books the kids themselves requested. Mostly, that’s what I did. I sent:
Christmas is Here!: Station Stop 1 (Strawberry Shortcake)
The Friendship Trip #3: Friendship Club (Strawberry Shortcake)
Earthquakes: All Aboard Science Reader Station
Stars: All Aboard Science Reader Station
The Great American Mousical (Julie Andrews Collection)
Pippi’s Extraordinary Ordinary Day
Dreamer Movie Novelization
Batman Begins: The Junior Novel
Eight Cousins
and
The Muppets Take Manhattan (DVD)
These last two weren’t on their list but I had to include them because I looooove them so much!
PS – Yay again for the 3 for 4 promotion!
Money’s a little tight right now, but I did send Happy Birthday To You (off the New and Classic Preschool Books Wish List), because everything’s better with a little Dr. Seuss.
You guys rock for creating this and running it every year. In honor of your awesomesauce, I sent the following to the Children’s Institute:
Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz
Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
The Best Friend (Fear Street, No. 17) by R.L. Stine
Killer’s Kiss (Fear Street, No. 42) by R.L. Stine
They are just the sort of books I liked to read in middle school. And, um, I am thinking of checking them out for myself now, actually! ;)
When I saw How to Eat Fried Worms (one of my favorites) on the Children’s Institute wish list how could I not buy it? And I might as well send a few others along while I was at it.
“How to Eat Fried Worms”
“Gross Out! (All Aboard Science Reader)”
“Make Like a Tree and Leave” Paula Danziger
“Sterling Biographies: Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Dream of Hope (Sterling Biographies)”
Alice Fleming;
“8th Grade In The Life Of Me, Cass (The Pity Party)”
Alison Pollet
I’m a faculty advisor for the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology. This week’s bake-sale proceeds went to the Children’s Institute. I was lucky because I got to choose the books. I searched for “high” priority items which were science-related and anything Dr. Seuss. I added the Sneetches because that book is simply the best.
Actual Size, Steve Jenkins
Prehistoric Actual Size, Steve Jenkins
Move!, Robin Page
Birdsongs, Betsy Franco
The Sneetches and Other Stories (Classic Seuss)
Dr. Seuss – The Lorax/Pontoffel Pock & His Magic Piano, Eddie Albert; DVD
Dr. Seuss – The Grinch Grinches The Cat In The Hat/The Hoober-Bloob Highway,Mason Adams; DVD
Dr. Seuss The Cat In the Hat (Animated)/Dr. Seuss: Green Eggs And Ham Value Pack, Dr Seuss, DVD
National Geographic: Really Wild Animals – Totally Tropical Rain Forest, Dudley Moore; DVD;
I sent Owen (Coleccion Rascacielos) by Kevin Henkes and Maria Luz Castela Gil-Torresano.

I decided to donate because of Alicia’s last letter and because I remember how much I loved books as a kid. My great-grandmother would buy me one new book during our outings if I was good. I used to be so careful in order to get that book.
I also took advantage of amazon’s 4 for 3 deal. I chose 5 requested books. I think the kids should be able to read what they like.
Pippi Goes to the Circus
Astrid Lindgren
Bug Out!: The World’s Creepiest, Crawliest Critters (All Aboard Science Reader)
Ginjer L. Clarke
Halloween Hideout #4: Friendship Club Strawberry Shortcake
Megan E. Bryant
Max Drives Away: A shaped board book (Max Board Books)
Rosemary Wells
The Boy Who Didn’t Want to Be Sad
Rob Goldblatt
I was reading the forums over at TWoP and was inspired by a suggestion there. So, this donation is made in honor of Sars, Wing, and Glark, with my thanks for the years of entertainment they provided (and, more importantly, for enabling my crippling procrastination tendencies). I hope you are taking a well-deserved vacation and I wish you all success in your future endeavors.
What did I buy?

How can anyone not get misty-eyed after reading Alicia Fox’s letter?
I had already planned to make one more donation for the final day of the drive and so The Children’s Institute will be getting two more of my favorites:
Dog Train : A Wild Ride on the Rock and Roll Side (Book and CD)
What I Call Life
I can hardly imagine what my life would have been like without books — or without the inspirational teachers and librarians who read aloud to me and put books in my hands. I always want to do my own small part in passing on the gift of books and stories to generations to come.
Whew! Got it in under the wire. I went for some of the soft bath books, because I love soft books and baths.
I sent $25 dollars to the Rockhouse Foundation and the following books to the Children’s Institute of their lists:
Charlie Bone and the Time Twister by Jenny Nimmo
My Crayons Talk by Patricia Hubbard
Ready, Set, Go! by Nina Laden
I added in these last two since they’re the books that got me into reading when a kindly librarian listed to me and helped me find something that would capture my imagination. Librarians rock!
The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley
Rockhouse Donors rock big time.
$13.99 — Cheryl Hawley
$25 — Anonymous Donor
$25 — Emily McConnell
$25 — Jena Klees: “Making things and reading are two big things in my family. Viva craft books!”
$25 — Anonymous Donor, “on behalf of everyone who discovered peace inside a book.”
Gigantic Dewey THANK YOU to
Jody Womsley, who sent $1000 to the Rockhouse Foundation, in memory of Steven Drury Womsley, stating: “Friends of Kate Drenkhahn,” who introduced Dewey to the Rockhouse Foundation in the first place.
Full circle donations. So fantastic.
How could I not buy more after reading that letter? So two books for CI:
Join the Club! #1: Friendship Club (Strawberry Shortcake)
All Aboard Reading Station Stop 1 Dance With Me! (All Aboard Reading)
I was reviewing my order from this morning and realized I left 2 books off the list:
Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Kittens! Kittens! Kittens!
It’s been great fun knowing that I’m helping get books in the hands of appreciative and deserving kids. I can’t wait to do it again next year.
Found out about this through TWOP, and since I wore out the children’s section of my library as a child, I was only too happy to be able to join in this effort. I so wish I was able to do more (in the future, perhaps). I’ve loved reading since I was very tiny, and it’s beautiful to share it with others.
Thanks to Ashley Thomas, who sent $50 in memory of Lena Miller. “I have been an avid reader since the age of four, so I’m just passing it on!”
Thanks as well to Dana Meller, for her gift of three books to the Children’s Institute.
I just can’t stop buying books. And eating Thin Mints. That second part’s not so relevant here though. There are notes saying that kids are requesting certain books, and who am I to be like, “No, child, no books for you!” That’d be so mean. I just bought
Baby Bop’s Purse (Barney)
I Love It When You Smile-Sam Mcbratney
Harold and the Purple Crayon: Dinosaur Days-Liza Baker
Each Little Bird That Sings-Deborah Wiles
Max’s Breakfast-Rosemary Wells
The Tail of Emily Windsnap-Liz Kessler
Omar! Getting in under the wire! We love you.
$100 — Omar Gallaga: “Because Dewey is my boyfriend.”
Just had to get a couple last books in after reading Alicia’s letter:
The Art of Bone-Jeff Smith
Not on the list, but…a companion to all the “Bone” comics,as well as a book for art classes, perhaps?
Amelia Rules #3-Superheroes by Jimmy Gownley
Because it was still on the list and I could not just let it sit there unpurchased.
Rock on everyone!
Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make the 2008 book drive the most successful yet!
That’s a wrap folks!
